5 Family Fun Ways to Make the Most of Summer!

Jun14

What to do with the seemingly endless amount of free time in the summer months away from school can prove to be a difficult task for some parents. For working parents, it may be harder for you to ensure that your child is getting the most out of their summer days, but there are plenty of things you can do to make sure their summer is as much of a development and learning period as it is a break from school.

One thing you want to be sure your child cuts back on is spending too much time indoors with their eyes glued to a screen. This does nothing for their mental processes and can actually become a cause for concern. Activities that incorporate a healthy balance of education, play, and relaxation prove to be the perfect mix to get the most enrichment and growth out of your child’s summer break. We’ve compiled a list of ideas that cover all of the bases that will make this summer one to remember for the whole family!

1. Start a Lemonade Stand

3778965891_72e1476ce8_z

Nothing really beats a good old fashioned lemonade stand in the hot summer heat! Let your kids express their creativity by decorating their own stand and creating flyers to put out around the neighborhood. Not only is this a fun activity for both you and your kids, this could also be an educational experience. This activity gives parents the chance to begin to instill entrepreneurial qualities in their children from a young age as they learn perseverance, communication skills, and, of course, the value of their hard-earned money and success!

2. Create a Family Cookbook

Calling all the sous chefs in the family! If your child loves helping out in the kitchen, this is a great activity for them to engage in that interest and take it to the next level. Creating your own family cookbook is a great way to bond with your children. You might have a new family tradition to pass down to future generations!

3. Pick Up a New Instrument.

Columbia Orchestra's Instrument Petting Zoo

If your child is a dancing machine or has ever pounded the “drums” on a turned over pot, learning to play an instrument could be something they will really enjoy! Music lessons of any sort have countless benefits such as total brain stimulation, an increase of brain capacity, and the ability to sharpen your concentration to name a few! Aside from the physical and psychological benefits, learning to play an instrument is a fun and stimulating hobby that kids and parents can really enjoy with no expiration date.

4. Volunteer at an Animal Shelter.

Volunteering at your local animal shelter is a great educational activity for you and your children over the summer months. Not only will your kids gain tons of knowledge of the different animals and their needs within the shelter, they will also learn compassion and selflessness through volunteering with animals. This type of activity is also perfect for that child who desperately wants a pet of their own. They will learn all that goes into caring for a pet without yet having sole responsibility for one of their own.

5. Have a Family Fun Day at Funderland!

KID_4916

At Funderland we are all about affordable family fun. Our park features everything a parent may need for a fun day at an amusement park without the crowds, lines, and absurd prices. And the best part is, parents can relax while knowing their kids are safe and having a blast exploring the park. This makes for great family fun on every visit.

Everyone knows that getting your kids out, active, and educated in a fun way during the summer months can be a challenging task, but with this list of activities, you and your child can prepare for one of the best summers yet!

5 Things to do With Your Kids this Summer

May16

Now that the kids are almost out of school, it’s time to start planning your summer activities to keep them busy! Whether it’s a summer sports or art camp, playdates with friends, or relaxing afternoons by the pool, there’s lots of things to do with your kids this summer. Here are just a few ideas for you!

5 Things to do With Your Kids this Summer

  1. Host a summer party. You don’t have to have a birthday to throw an awesome summer party. All you need is some creativity, space, and sunshine. Some fun themes include a Luau Party, a Pool Party, or a Party at the Farm. Head to the dollar store for inexpensive items like hula hoops, flower leis, water toys, or hats. Don’t forget fun games like pin the tail on the donkey, pinatas, hopscotch, musical chairs, or 3 legged race.
  2. Explore your neighborhood. The Greater Sacramento Area is full of beautiful parks and trails. Take a nature walk through scenic parks like William Land Park. Make it more exciting by turning your walk into a scavenger hunt! List items like leaves, rocks, flowers, and landmark items like statues, fountains, and signs.
  3. Get fit together. Nothing brings your family closer than exercising together. It’s a great way to get and stay healthy and nothing keeps you motivated better than your kids! Plus, you’ll be setting a good example of how to be healthy and make fitness fun, not a chore. Try family friendly activities like biking, swimming, yoga, or hiking. You can even take your normal circuit training moves and tweak them for the kids. Body weight exercises like pushups, sit ups, lunges, crunches, jumping jacks, etc…are all great ways to keep the wee ones moving and having fun with mom and dad.
  4. Build a fort. Nothing makes you feel like a kid yourself than building and crawling around in a home made fort. For fantastic fort ideas, check out this Pinterest board. Pull out those blankets, pillows, cardboard boxes, flashlights, and couch cushions and get building!
  5. And of course plan a family day or playdate at Funderland. We have 9 pint sized rides for kids of all ages. We also have plenty of picnic areas, cafe treats, and attractions – perfect for a sunny summer day. So plan a family “Stay-cation” and pack in the fun at Funderland Amusement Park!

What Being a Mom Really Means

May02

As moms, we often get stuck in the day-to-day tasks that govern motherhood and wonder what in the world we’re doing. Some of these tasks are wonderful like those sweet moments when your kids are playing nicely with each other, when they’re using their manners, and when you’ve gotten all your housework down before noon (which means you’ll have the chance to actually sit down and play with your kids today!) Other moments are tough and exhausting like when you’re up all night with a sick child, when your kids are bickering non-stop, and when you’re late (again) for an appointment. During the good and not-so-good moments, don’t forget what it really means to be a mommy.

Being a Mom Means:

  • Responsibility is your middle name. You’re responsible for shaping, inspiring, encouraging, and loving the most sweetest kids in town. Although this task can weigh heavy on your shoulders, what joy it also brings! No words can describe the pride you feel when your son hits his first base run, or when your daughter’s solo in her class recital is adorably off key but she’s signing with all her might. Take pride in this responsibility, being a mother will be your most important job in life.
  • You wear a lot of hats. You’re a nurse, teacher, cook, house cleaner, referee, chauffeur, and counselor. It also means you’re an adventure tour guide, scientist, entrepreneur, obstacle course pro, artist, and a best friend.
  • Knowing your best is enough. There is no perfect mother, although some of us might swear we know one or two of them. Every mom doubts, fears, feels guilt, loses patience, and makes mistakes. But that’s not what define you as a mother. Since no one is perfect, how can we expect to achieve perfection in motherhood? Love and be gracious to yourself.
  • You’re #1 to someone. Although sometimes they may not act like it or know how to show you, your kids absolutely adore you. No one else can ever take the place of “Mommy” in their hearts.

The goal of every mom is to raise healthy happy kids, not perfect kids. So no matter what your background is, what mistakes you’ve made, or what situation you’re facing now, remember what being a mom really means.

Funderland is Making a Difference (by being environmentally responsible)

Apr21

We want to make a different in our city!

At Funderland Amusement Park, we take being environmentally responsible and taking care of our community seriously. We’re always looking for ways to reduce, reuse, recylce and “up-cylce” as much as we can.

Here are just a few things we’ve done at the park to show the earth and community a little more love:

  • Placed recycle bins throughout the park to collect recyclable waste

  • Upgraded to biodegradable cups (no more styrofoam for this squirrel!)

  • Updated our train engine to one run on electricity rather than gas

  • Installed faux grass in party areas (and plan to install more around the park) to minimize water usage

  • Recycle all of our cardboard, glass, and plastic waste

  • Planted water-wise plants

  • Updated to more energy efficient fridges and freezers

  • Reuse as many props and event items as we can

  • Plus – our owner drives a hybrid vehicle!

reduce reuse recycle Just think about what we could accomplish if we all decided to do one thing every month to give back to our community and help take care of our planet!

Won’t you celebrate Earth Day with us?

In celebration of Earth Day – we’re giving away 4 2014 Season Passes to the Earth Friendly Family of the Year! Just snap a photo of your family being environmentally responsible and upload to our Facebook page by clicking here until 4/25!
